Belize, a country in Central America, has the largest barrier reef in this hemisphere. The Belize Barrier Reef is about 300 kilometers  long (the second largest in the world – just behind the Great Barrier reef in Australia) and combined with it’s 1000′s of Cayes (islands) and the location o Great Blue Hole it is a beautiful diving and eco-tourism destination.

Just so you know, I do not own or run a travel agency, nor do I own any business or anything in Belize (although I would like to someday). I have been to Belize, drank Belikin and realized I needed to be the one to bring this secret to the rest of the world. Hopefully one day we’ll see each other on one of the Cayes living the dream.

This blog will hopefully bring out some of the beauty of Belize and then you’ll go back if you been before or you’ll put it on your list if you  haven’t been.

I first went to Belize (as many people do) because it was a stop on a cruise. I saw Belize City and was not really impressed.

Then I ended up driving around the area, meeting the people, drinking the beer (Belikin), eating the local Belizean food and realized I needed to spend more time here. Belize City is a major cruise ship port and becoming bigger and it reminds me a lot of Jamaica or the east coast of Panama or Tijuana. Kinda slummy, with a big disparity between the haves and the have-nots. But, I’m sorry Belize City, no one goes to Belize to see Belize City.

There are some amazing area of Belize that you can get a taste of with a short trip from Belize City. The country is after all 37% designated as protected and there is about 60% of the country that is forest.

Over the coming posts we’ll highlight some of the great spots to consider visiting, from the forests to the cayes, from jaguars to toucans, from waterfalls to coral.
